Hawksbill Sea Turtle Swimming

For The Adventurer – SCUBA Diving & Snorkeling

Upon your arrival at Turks and Caicos, the first of many things that’ll take your breath away are the crystal clear waters surrounding the islands. In fact, on especially clear days you can see as far as 200 feet underwater! That clarity combined with abundant aquatic life and beautiful coral reefs makes Turks and Caicos a diver’s paradise!

A major contributing factor to the lively waters around Providenciales (Provo for short) is the Princess Alexandra National Park and Nature Reserve, in which no commercial or sport fishing is allowed. There’s so much marine life to see here, that there’s barely enough room for the water! Some noteworthy sea critters that frequent this area are Hawksbill Turtles, Bottlenose Dolphins, Spotted Eagle Rays, and Caribbean Reef Sharks.

The best way to truly immerse oneself in this oceanic oasis is undoubtedly with a SCUBA tank strapped to your back. You can learn to dive and book a dive excursion or two by contacting one of the many dive shops in Turks and Caicos.

If SCUBA isn’t your thing, you can still join in on the fun by taking a snorkeling cruise. With just a mask, snorkel and fins you’ll still be able to access and enjoy the same clear waters as the divers!

Man Kiteboarding in Turks and Caicos on a sunny day

For The Adrenaline Junkie – Kiteboarding

Should your interests lean more towards the faster, more heart-pounding activities, Turks and Caicos has you covered with its amazing kiteboarding and parasailing opportunities.

Kiteboarding is especially popular in Provo due to the island’s shallow and calm waters. On many of the island’s beaches you can stand in the water a long way out, and there are typically no strong currents or sharp rocks along the sandy bottoms. Those new to kiteboarding can learn with peace-of-mind knowing it’s safe and easy to recover from a fall in the waters here, and experienced kite-boarders will enjoy the buttery-smooth rides in the warm conditions.

For more information on learning this sport or picking up some equipment, check out our Turks and Caicos Kiteboarding page.

View From Sapodilla Bay Hill Historical Site In Turks and Caicos

For The Historian – Museums & Protected Sites

History buffs will have far more things to do than scour the beaches for buried pirate treasure on a visit to Turks and Caicos. There are several fascinating protected historic sites scattered across the islands as well as a couple museums. Two must-visit spots are Sapodilla Bay Hill and the Cheshire Hall Plantation.

Starting with Sapodilla Bay Hill, the main attractions of this site are the centuries-old rock carvings left by sailors shipwrecked on the island. Among the rock inscriptions are names, dates, symbols, and drawings of ships and buildings. Those, combined with the beautiful views at the top of the hill make this a site to remember for your own personal history book.

As for Cheshire Hall, this cotton plantation built in the late 1700s offers a glimpse back into the Loyalist historical period on the Caicos island. Although development on Provo overtook some areas, you can still see several historic buildings such as the great house, slave quarters, kitchen, and cotton press bases. Tours are available during weekdays with a $10 admission fee for adults and children over three years old.
