Basic Info About Turks and Caicos

Where is Turks and Caicos?
The Turks and Caicos Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean, southeast of the Bahamas and roughly 600 miles southeast of Miami, Florida. Despite being in the Atlantic, they are often considered part of the Caribbean region in terms of culture and climate. This island chain is made up of roughly 40 low-lying islands and cays, with only a few inhabited by people. Providenciales, or “Provo,” is the most visited island and the hub for international arrivals. It’s also where you’ll find stunning vacation villas like those offered from Villa Esencia!
What is the official language and currency?
English is the official language, and the U.S. dollar is accepted everywhere. This makes it easy for visitors from the United States to navigate without currency exchanges or worrying about language barriers.
Does it cost money to access the beaches?
No! All the beaches in Turks and Caicos are public and free to access, from the popular Grace Bay area to the more intimate Long Bay Beach.
Do I need an electrical adapter in Turks and Caicos?
If you’re traveling from the U.S., you do not need an electrical outlet adapter for Turks and Caicos, as the island uses the same voltage (110V, 60Hz).
Entry Requirements and Travel Guidelines

Do I need a passport to travel to Turks and Caicos?
Yes. A valid passport is required for all travelers, including U.S. citizens. Visas are not required for stays under 90 days for most nationalities, but you should double-check the current policies on the Department of State’s information page or the Turks and Caicos immigration and customs website before your trip.
In 2025, Visa-Exempt Countries Include:
- United States
- Canada
- United Kingdom
- Most European Union countries
- Caribbean Community (CARICOM) member states
- Australia and New Zealand
Beyond your passport, other potential travel requirements for U.S. citizens may include proof of accommodation and a return or onward ticket.
Are there travel restrictions or health requirements for visiting Turks and Caicos?
The islands currently have no major travel restrictions, but it is recommended visitors purchase travel insurance that includes health coverage and trip cancellation protection, especially during hurricane season (June–November).
Can I bring my dog to Turks and Caicos?
Yes, but it’s not easy and requires advanced approval. You must apply for an import permit from the Turks and Caicos Department of Agriculture and submit an international health certificate endorsed by your country’s animal health authority (like the USDA for U.S. travelers).
You’ll also need to show documentation for rabies vaccination, microchipping, recent health records, and possibly proof of spay/neuter. The permit takes at least two business days to process, and you should apply well in advance of your trip.
A local vet clinic, Bark + Bliss, offers travel consultation services to help with the process, which is recommended since pet entry requirements can change without notice.
Budgeting and Planning Your Trip

What is the average cost to travel to Turks and Caicos?
Turks and Caicos is known for its upscale vibe, but costs can vary widely. Flights from the United States can range from $300–$700, depending on the season, and accommodations vary from all-inclusive resorts to island villas like those at Villa Esencia. Dining and excursions also vary, but cooking in your rental and choosing free activities like snorkeling along the coral reefs or kiteboarding at Long Bay Beach can help manage expenses.
How can I travel to Turks and Caicos on a budget?
- Visit in the shoulder seasons (late spring or early fall).
- Cook meals in your villa. (Pro Tip: You can even bring your own food with you to save on some of your grocery costs! See what foods are allowed.)
- Skip the tours and explore public beaches, local food trucks, and island trails.
- Book direct instead of with Airbnb or VRBO to avoid third-party fees and ensure you get the best rates.

When is the best time to travel to Turks and Caicos?
December through April offers the best weather in Turks and Caicos, with warm, dry days. That’s why it’s also the most popular time to visit – people want to escape the cold weather blues. While this means things are likely to be more expensive, it also means you have the best chance to experience everything the islands have to offer, like excursions, the best restaurants, and more.
Hurricane season runs from June to November, so if you’re looking to save on your stay, booking in this window is helpful; just keep an eye on forecasts and remember to get that travel insurance.
What should I pack for a Turks and Caicos vacation?
Think lightweight and casual. Bring swimsuits, cover-ups, reef-safe sunscreen, flip-flops, bug spray, and breathable clothing. A rash guard or snorkeling gear is helpful for exploring coral reefs, and a light sweater can come in handy in the evening. For nights out, plan for one or two upscale dining experiences and keep the rest of the wardrobe low maintenance. And of course, don’t forget the sunglasses and hats!
Traveling to Turks and Caicos with Kids

Is Turks and Caicos family-friendly?
Absolutely. With calm beaches, shallow waters, and plenty of space to roam, the islands are great for kids. Many villas (including ours) are designed with families in mind and offer easy beach access and space to relax. Our villas also provide amenities like hot tubs, pools, pickleball and tennis courts, water activity equipment, and comfortable furnishings that make each space feel like home.
Do I need a car in Turks and Caicos?
While taxis and limited public transport are available, those costs can add up fast. You’ll likely want to rent a car for convenience, especially if you’re staying in more private areas like Turtle Cove or Long Bay Beach. Or, you can rent a Villa Esencia vacation rental that comes with a car!
Insider Tip: Be prepared to drive on the left while you’re here!

Guided Turks and Caicos Excursions vs Solo Exploration

Whether you choose to head out on a guided excursion or go it alone depends entirely on what kind of adventure you want to have! Here are our top picks for each:
Big Blue Collective
Big Blue Collective offers a little bit of everything: Boat charters, snorkeling, diving, paddling, and even kite surfing tours. Focusing on eco-friendly excursions, their offerings are often calmer than those of other group tour companies. You won’t find loud music on their boats or rowdy crowds. Rather, you’ll experience the quiet serenity of the islands as you soak in all the natural beauty around you.
North and Middle Caicos Solo Trip
If you want to get away and sightsee on your own, here’s how we’d recommend doing it. First, take the 25-minute ferry ride from Provo to North Caicos. The ride will cost you about $65 for a round-trip ticket.
Once you arrive in North Caicos, head to Al’s Rent a Car and pick up a Jeep for your day of cruising the islands. (Be sure to reserve your car beforehand, as Jeeps can go quickly). Once you’re in your rental, the islands are yours for the wandering! Wear your bathing suit, bring some bug spray and sunscreen, as well as some water and snacks, and just spend the day finding secluded beaches.
The beach at Mudjin Harbor, Bottle Creek, and the Conch Bar Caves are each a must-see, though you need a reservation to visit the caves. Other than that, just drive and keep your eyes peeled for flamingos and secluded beaches where you could easily be the only people on a stretch of sand.

Located in the middle of the stunning blue waters of the Caribbean, the Turks and Caicos Islands are an exceptional vacation destination that welcomes over a million visitors each year. If you’re planning an upcoming getaway, this blog will help you discover how to get around Turks and Caicos while you’re here.
With limited options, planning your transportation before you arrive is paramount and can save you a lot of money! From rental cars or a taxi service to golf carts or small planes, there are several unique ways to see the island. Check out the different options and decide what’s right for your family as you plan your Turks and Caicos vacation.
Taxi Services

As there is no public transport in Turks and Caicos (this includes Uber and Lyft), taxi services are the closest you’ll get to assisted car travel during your vacation. Unlike the iconic yellow cabs you may be used to, taxis in TCI tend to be large vans.
This makes traveling with bigger groups or things like car seats much easier. However, because of the large size of the taxis, they tend to operate on a shared basis. This means several groups ride together to their respective destinations, which can add time to your already long travel days. You can pre-book a private ride to avoid sharing a taxi; however, prices will likely be higher.
Taxi Service FAQ
How do Turks and Caicos taxis set their rates?
There are no meters in the taxis in Turks and Caicos. Instead, there are statutory fares for certain routes and distances. Prices can be charged by person or as a whole, and it’s important to clarify which your driver will use before you ride.
Are there any discounts for children in Taxis?
Yes. Children under two ride for free. However, children over two are the same price as adults.
What is the average fare from Jags McCartney International Airport GDT to Grace Bay Beach?
Anticipate a fee of $28 – $34 for two people.
Estimated rates from the airport to other top locations:
- Turtle Cove: $16
- Graceway IGA Supermarket: $20
- Beaches Resort: $27
- Long Bay Beach: $45
- Chalk Sound: $36
- Leeward: $43
- Amanyara Resort: $86
What should I confirm before I get in a shared taxi?
Confirm the price for the trip, including any charges for additional people in your party or charges for your luggage.
Rental Companies

From ease to reliability, the most popular answer for how to get around Turks and Caicos is to rent a car. Walking distances to shops and restaurants can be spread out, making it a less-than-desirable option, and constant taxi rides can add up quickly.
Renting a car means you can travel at your own pace and explore wherever you want. Plus, with a fixed daily rate, which starts around $40 per day, you can cap your cost. Being an island, the inventory of most rental services is limited, so if you need a larger vehicle, you should reserve your ride well in advance of your arrival, as smaller compact cars are the most readily available.
When you book your rental car, be sure to check the company reviews of your selected provider. Many rental car companies have a poor reputation due to exorbitant cleaning fees, bait-and-switch tactics, and overselling. Some of the top car rental services include Grace Bay Car Rentals, Scott’s Rental Car, and Scooter Bob’s.
For travel ideas during your stay, check out these three day-trip itineraries!
Car Rental FAQ
When should I book my Turks and Caicos rental car?
Book as early as possible, especially if you’re visiting at a popular time of year, for the best rates and the best chance of getting the car you want.
Where are the rental cars at Jags McCartney International Airport?
GDT airport’s arrivals hall features several franchised global rental car brands. Other agencies have off-site locations and offer shuttle service to their facilities.
What do I need to be able to rent a car in Turks and Caicos?
Be sure you have a valid driver’s license, a credit card in the driver’s name, and proof of insurance. International visitors should have their passports and an International Driving Permit (if applicable).
Can I drive on the beach in Turks and Caicos?
No. It’s illegal to drive on the beach or in tidal pools, as the majority of salt flats and ponds are protected nature reserves. Large fines will be given if you’re found in restricted areas. Additionally, it’s easy to get stuck, resulting in expensive towing fees.
Scooters, Jeeps, and Golf Carts

Beyond day-to-day transportation, you can add some fun to your Turks and Caicos transportation when you rent a scooter, a 4×4 Jeep Wrangler, or even a golf cart! Keep in mind some roads are better suited for certain vehicles than others.
If you’re sticking to the tourist districts of Grace Bay, the Bight, Turtle Cove, or Leeward, a scooter is a fun and unique way to see the sights. Beyond that, when you venture to scenic regions of Chalk Sound, Sapodilla Bay, or sights along Leeward Highway or South Dock Road, a soft-top Jeep is a better option. While four-wheel drive vehicles are available, you won’t likely need them, so don’t fret if you can’t find one.
For resort areas, golf carts offer another leisurely way to explore. Unlike scooters which only seat one person, you can find four to six-seater golf carts at places like Paradise Carts.
Inter-Island Planes
Inter-island travel in Turks and Caicos is facilitated by local airlines, interCaribbean and Caicos Express, which connect Providenciales with Grand Turk, South Caicos, and Salt Cay through daily or frequent flights.
While Providenciales and Grand Turk flights may include a brief stop in South Caicos, services to Salt Cay are less frequent and vary by demand, often allowing for day trips. Private islands like Pine Cay and Ambergris Cay have airstrips without scheduled service, while airfares between the islands start around $135, with reservations highly recommended.
Important Turks and Caicos Transportation Rules
You may be surprised to learn that traffic drives on the left in Turks and Caicos. When you’re renting a car, be sure to ask if the car you’ve selected is left- or right-hand oriented. You’ll also find a mix of traffic signs from both the United States and England, so be sure to take it easy and pay attention, as drivers can be erratic, and roads are often narrow.
From North Caicos and Middle Caicos to South Caicos and Grand Turk, you’ll likely find the drivers on the islands to be a bit reckless. Opting for insurance is a very good idea no matter what you rent or reserve, and selecting a defensive, confident driver will definitely make a difference.

Top Turks and Caicos Golf Courses

Royal Turks and Caicos Golf Club
Perhaps the most popular golf course in the Turks and Caicos Islands, Royal Turks and Caicos, near Grace Bay, is the only full-sized conventional 18-hole course in the area. Previously named the Provo Golf Club, this pristine course was designed by Karl Litten and features grounds complemented by beautiful water features, towering palm trees, flamingos, and other tropical birds and wildlife.
Membership is not required to play, and your golf cart is included with your greens fees, making for an easy golf experience. After your round on the par-72 course, head to the club’s on-site restaurant, #19 Bar, for breakfast, lunch, or a celebratory cocktail. Or take advantage of the practice chipping and putting areas. Voted the number 1 course in the Caribbean, Royal Turks and Caicos is the pinnacle of golfing on the island.

Waterloo Golf Club
Opened in 1998 at the Governor’s residence, Waterloo Mansion, this compact 9-hole course in Grand Turk was built entirely by volunteers. Designed by then-Governor John Kelly, it features 2,758 yards of well-balanced play. The grounds wind past Governor’s Beach, and though they have succumbed to frequent periods of drought and are mostly sand these days, locals and visitors alike love to visit this course for the unique and fun challenges it offers.
Turn 9 holes into 18 by repeating the course and using multiple tee boxes, and if you get confused, just as a local – they’re more than happy to help ensure your visit to this community course exceeds all your expectations. After your round, visit the putting green to work on your stroke. Grounds fees are just $25 per day, and clubs are available to rent, though supplies are limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
To book a tee time, you can call the club at (649) 946-2308. Only 36 golfers are allowed on the course at one time, so be sure to book early if you want to check this Turks and Caicos golf course out during your vacation.

Combina Golf Course
Near Horse Stable Beach in Whitby, North Caicos, Combina Golf Course provides a truly unique island golfing experience. Created by local musician and community icon Lovey Forbes in 2013, this 18-hole putting course embraces the natural beauty of the Caribbean, featuring sand instead of tightly manicured grass and a layout surrounded by casuarina trees. Each hole, ranging from 8 to 75 feet in length, is marked by conch shells, adding a charming, island-inspired touch.
Unlike a traditional course, Combina invites players to enjoy a casual, laid-back game in a circular design that flows effortlessly through the tropical landscape. While there’s no clubhouse or pro shop, Lovey personally maintains the course, and putters and balls are provided. There’s no fee to play, though donations are welcomed to help with upkeep. To schedule a round, you can reach out directly to Lovey Forbes by calling (649) 242-8802.

Today, it seems like every aspect of our lives is tied to technology. We wake up from the alarm clock on our phone. Pick it up before we’re even out of bed. We doom-scroll to pass the time, work all day on laptops, and at night, often listen to the TV while we tap through our friend’s stories and posts.
Because of this constant connection, people feel more drained than ever before, leading to many travelers searching for digital detox vacations—places where they can unplug and unwind away from all the dings and pings. If you’re searching for a getaway that will help you reconnect with yourself and your loved ones, Turks and Caicos is the perfect destination.
With gorgeous white sand beaches, beautiful turquoise water so clear you can see straight to the bottom, and charming villas that tuck you away from all the noise, it’s the epitome of a restful vacation. If this is ringing true for you, check out our ultimate guide to relaxing Turks and Caicos activities and use it to plan your perfect getaway. From beautiful properties to unique things to do, it’s all here.
Pristine Providenciales Beaches

It goes without saying, the highlight of any tropical vacation is time spent on the beautiful beaches. With the warm air blowing in from the water, a cold drink in your hand, and the sound of crashing waves in the distance, all your worries drift away.
Relax in the sand and watch the kite surfers soar overhead at Long Bay Beach, or float in the gentle waves at Grace Bay Beach. Whether you’re someone who likes to be in the water all day or just near it, the beaches are one of the most relaxing activities in Turks and Caicos.
Spas and Wellness
Treat yourself to the ultimate relaxing experience and reserve an in-home massage from Spa Tropique. They’ve been in business longer than any other spa company in Turks and Caicos and have earned the reputation of the Best on the Islands, evidenced by their #1 rating on TripAdvisor for more than a decade. You can choose to visit them at one of their many locations or schedule their mobile service to come to you at your Villa Esencia vacation rental!
Their services range from hot stone massages to blissful facials and so much more. Consider booking them to come on your first full day of vacation so they can work out all the travel tension and get you ready to enjoy your trip.
In addition to spas, you’ll find many opportunities to recenter yourself during your tropical getaway. Local yoga studios offer outdoor classes, so you can combine the ancient practice with the meditative ambiance of the waves, helping you lean into the moment and be present in this peaceful paradise.
Outdoor Activities

Being out in nature is the best cure for an overly stressed mind. When you’re looking to relax during your Turks and Caicos vacation, outdoor activities are an excellent choice. Explore the exquisite underwater world of tropical fish and colorful coral reefs when you snorkel or scuba dive. Bight Reef near Grace Bay or Smith’s Reef offers some of the most beautiful scenery in the tropical Atlantic.
For dryland activities, horseback riding on the beach is a must-do. Feel the wind in your hair as you trot the sandy shores and wade through the crystalline waters. Companies on the island have horses appropriate for all skill levels and can help you choose the right ride for you.
For a quiet day, consider a visit to Frenchman’s Creek and Pigeon Pond Nature Reserve, where you can wander trails and see features like Split Rock, Pirate’s Cave, Bonefish Point, and the Blue Hole. Due to its remote location, it’s recommended to book a visit with a local water sports business, but the scenery is some of the most phenomenal on the island, so it’s definitely worth adding to your list of relaxing activities.
Romantic Restaurants
Indulging in decadent local cuisine is one of the best parts of a vacation and an excellent way to relax. In Turks and Caicos, you’ll find exceptional restaurants featuring locally sourced ingredients and fresh seafood that highlight the region beautifully.
Enjoy letting someone else handle the cooking and cleaning and visit one of the island’s top fine dining restaurants. Sip and savor your way through creative menus while you watch the sunset over the water. From fresh-caught fish and seafood to melt-in-your-mouth steaks, the food scene in Turks and Caicos will leave you craving more.
Chartered Adventures

While your Turks and Caicos vacation rental is likely right on the beach, sometimes you may want to venture out a little farther. That’s where Big Blue Collective comes in. With the largest range of private and custom boating charters in the area, you can create your dream day out on the water.
Choose from multiple tours, including a half-day trip that stays closer to the shore, focusing on Big Water Cay, Half Moon Bay, and Ft. George. Or the full-day adventure on the North Side where you can hang at Water Cay, spend time on the sandbar, and visit the famous dolphins JoJo, Bo, and Scooter. If you’re visiting January – April, you can even take a whale-watching trip and get a chance to view humpback whales!

Endless Beach Fun

From Long Bay Beach to Grace Bay and everywhere in between, the miles of expansive shoreline in Turks and Caicos means you’re never far away from beach fun.

Affordable Sightseeing Tours
While self-guided exploration doesn’t cost a thing, if you do want a guided tour, we recommend heading to Grand Turk for a day of historical sightseeing on their open-air tram. A round-trip ticket to Grand Turk typically comes in under $100 dollars with interCaribbean flights, and the guided tour is about $25 per person.
Enjoy an entertaining and informative ride as you pass the National Museum, Grand Turk Lighthouse, Her Majesty’s Prison, and more. You’ll even get to see adorable donkeys, horses, and flamingos!
Beyond historical sights, your ride features a stop in Cockburn Town, where you can shop local vendors and find your one-of-a-kind souvenir. It’s also a great spot to try some authentic Caribbean cuisine. With flight times averaging about 30 minutes, this is an excellent, affordable day trip to try during your Turks and Caicos vacation.
Visit the Rock Iguanas
Nature enthusiasts will love visiting Little Water Cay to see the endangered Rock Iguanas in their natural habitat. To enjoy this budget-friendly activity, head to the Leeward Marina, where you can rent a kayak or small boat for the short 499-yard trek across the channel.
Once you arrive, you can easily spend a few hours soaking in the unspoiled splendor of this remote area. Wander their well-maintained boardwalk trails through the lush forests and keep your eyes trained on shady areas, especially if you’re visiting during the hottest part of the day. After observing these unique wonders, head to the beach for a picnic and a refreshing swim in the ocean before heading back to Provo. Note: While kayaking is doable, it’s recommended you have some experience before making this trip due to choppy water and frequent passing boats.
Cruise the Island

For just $69 dollars, you can spend a day zipping around the island on a scooter from Scooter Bob’s. A budget-friendly and fun way to get around, scooters let you maneuver the streets of Provo with ease. Explore tourist districts like Grace Bay, Turtle Cove, and the Bight, or head to more remote areas like Chalk Sound or Sapodilla Bay.
If riding a scooter feels too daunting, Scooter Bob’s also offers daily electric bicycle rentals for $18. Enjoy the hop-on/hop-off ease of these transportation options as you roam the island at your leisure.
Turks and Caicos Fish Fry
Every Thursday from 5:30 PM to 9:30 PM, locals and visitors alike flock to Stubbs Diamond Plaza for a phenomenal evening of food, music, and fun. This free activity is the perfect addition to your budget-friendly Turks and Caicos vacation and offers you a chance to experience a taste of Caribbean culture.
Enjoy lively Junkanoo parades, traditional Rake and Scrape dances, and bespoke goods that highlight the island’s creative flair, all while indulging in delicious food and community. The Fish Fry creates an open environment for everyone to join in celebration and is an event you’ll remember long after you return home.

One of the most cost-effective things you can do as you plan your budget-friendly Turks and Caicos vacation is to book your rental directly with a property manager versus using an online travel agency like Airbnb or VRBO.
When you go directly to the property manager, you avoid hidden fees, extra taxes, and myriad other headaches that just take money away from your vacation. At Villa Esencia, not only do you get the ease of working with a local company, you also get peace of mind knowing you booked a gorgeous Turks and Caicos villa at the best rate. With more than one million visitors arriving on the pristine shores of Turks and Caicos in 2023, this stunning Caribbean destination has continued to see a boom in its tourism industry. With gorgeous clear blue water, secluded beaches that immerse you in nature, a rich culture, and a relaxing vibe, it’s no wonder why people continue to visit in droves. Whether you’re here for a week or you just have an afternoon of excursions while visiting on a cruise, the exceptional beauty of this region will have a lasting impression. That’s why eco-friendly travel in Turks and Caicos has become so important! To ensure the islands remain a haven for visitors and locals for generations to come, as you plan your visit, take some time to familiarize yourself with local policies, plan eco-friendly outings, and look for ways to decrease your carbon footprint while you’re here. For tips on how to do this – read on!
What is Eco-Tourism?

Simply put, eco-tourism is the practice of traveling in a way that promotes the preservation of local resources, habitats, and cultures. It celebrates exploring natural wonders without exploiting them. It values experiencing unspoiled areas and fosters a commitment to ensuring those areas remain intact for future visitors and, more importantly, for those who call these areas home.
As a multi-billion-dollar industry, eco-tourism is only increasing in popularity as travelers are looking for more authentic experiences. When you’re planning your Turks and Caicos getaway, one way to travel responsibly is by booking a vacation rental home versus staying at a large resort. Local island homes give you the ability to cook your own meals – often leading to a decrease in waste, enjoy more secluded areas of the island, and often come with amenities like beach gear so you can explore the great outdoors with ease.

The Importance of Eco-Conservation in Turks and Caicos
Home to plants and animals you won’t find anywhere else in the world, conservation efforts are of the utmost importance to the scientific community and the native inhabitants of Turks and Caicos. From the Rock Iguana to the Queen Conch, some of the area’s most important animals are facing critical endangerment due to changing environments, be that from encroachment on natural habitats or rising ocean temperatures.
Eco-conservation focuses on protecting the native species of places like Turks and Caicos by raising awareness, offering educational tours, and guaranteeing natural areas are protected from overdevelopment. With Earth Day coming up on April 22, if you’re planning to vacation in Turks and Caicos, consider incorporating tours into your stay that focus on conservation efforts or volunteer opportunities on the island!
Eco-Tourism Policies in Turks and Caicos
With the intent of protecting Turks and Caicos from overfishing, water pollution, damaged reefs, and other harmful impacts on the delicate natural areas, the region has adopted several eco-tourism and conservation policies over the years. Nearly every island in Turks and Caicos has an established national marine park area, ensuring no commercial fishing or sport fishing is allowed in designated areas. This not only protects the native species but keeps the coral reefs safe from dragging anchors, as well. To combat freshwater shortages, the islands have constructed reverse osmosis plants on Provo and Grand Turk. Additionally, the islands are revitalizing rich farmland in Kew thanks to subsidies and grants, which will create jobs and allow fresh produce to be grown and sold on the islands instead of relying so heavily on air-transported/imported foods. These efforts and many others are all aiding in preserving this exquisite corner of the Caribbean.
How to Travel Sustainably

When it comes to sustainable travel practices, you can decrease your carbon footprint by doing these things:
- Pay attention to the emissions of your flights
- Opt for walking, biking, or renting an electric or hybrid car
- Trade single-use products for reusable ones
- Practice Leave No Trace
- Use reef-safe sunscreen
- Choose sustainable accommodations
- Pick up litter if you see it
- Be considerate of native flora and fauna, and keep your distance when observing wildlife
- Do your research before you travel so you know about local policies and best practices
Best Eco-Friendly Things to Do in Turks and Caicos
Luckily, engaging in eco-friendly things to do in Turks and Caicos is easy. If you want to get out on the water, why not try kite surfing? The area is well known for its ideal conditions, and with zero emissions, it’s an absolutely adrenaline-packed watersport to try while you’re here. For more leisurely things to do, you can book a mangrove kayak tour or head out into the calm water for an afternoon of paddleboarding or snorkeling. Nature enthusiasts will love visiting neighboring islands to see the Rock Iguanas or just wandering through lush trails of palm trees and unique local vegetation. For nights out, find local restaurants that prioritize island-grown produce and locally caught seafood. And when it comes to shopping, visit farmer’s markets and mom-and-pop’s so you can give back to the community that’s enabling your incredible vacation. With each person doing their part, Turks and Caicos will remain a thriving and beautiful destination for people to enjoy.

Big South Regatta

The oldest festival in Turks and Caicos, the Big South Regatta, has been running for over 50 years. What began as a commemorative event to celebrate the 1966 arrival of Queen Elizabeth II to the island has grown into one of the most exciting events of the year. Held over the last weekend in May, the three-day festival is more than a boat race; it’s a chance for the people of South Caicos to showcase their unique culture and maritime prowess. Amateur and semi-pro yacht captains take to the water to compete while on land; there’s live music, delicious Caribbean food, and cultural shows that keep the crowds entertained. If you’re staying in one of our Villa Esencia vacation rentals on Providenciales, you can easily reach South Caicos via passenger ferry or plane.
Race for the Conch
Are you an avid swimmer? Do you love supporting a good cause? If you answered yes, the Race for the Conch event is definitely for you if you’re visiting Turks and Caicos at the end of June. Featuring a 2.4-mile, 1-mile, and half-mile race, swimmers take to the crystal blue waters of Grace Bay as they compete for the best time. Proceeds from sponsorships and race fees directly support the Provo Children’s Home, local swimming programs, the RC Reef Fund, and initiatives to help special needs children in the outer islands.
Caribbean Food and Wine Festival
Held each October, the Caribbean Food and Wine Festival presents a week of extraordinary indulgence featuring the unique flavors of the islands. From award-winning chefs and cooking demonstrations to workshops, wine classes, panel discussions, and lively parties, every second of this festival is jam-packed with opportunities to sip and savor fantastic creations that highlight this region’s delicacies. Turks and Caicos International Film Festival
This annual event in Turks and Caicos is unlike any film festival you’ve been to before. With a focus on environmental stories, the films presented at the Turks and Caicos International Film Festival (TCIFF) help raise awareness and support conservation efforts for our oceans and work to preserve their natural beauty so they can be enjoyed by generations yet to come. The festival features writer’s workshops, film screenings, and discussions with directors and casts of featured films. Whether you attend one screening or enjoy the entire festival, the stories you’ll hear at TCIFF will stay with you long after you return from your Turks and Caicos vacation.
Maskanoo Festival

The annual Maskanoo Festival is the largest festival in Turks and Caicos and happens every December 26th, making it the perfect addition to your vacation if you’re planning a holiday getaway. Celebrating the island’s rich history and unique culture, Maskanoo commemorates the West African and Caribbean heritage that was forged as enslaved people celebrated Christmas with activities that parodied the lavish affairs of the island’s wealthy. Today, Maskanoo features lively music, cultural activities, and authentic food and culminates with spectacular fireworks that light up the night sky over Grace Bay. Get a truly local experience when you participate in this can’t-miss annual Turks and Caicos event.
